New strategic partnership: Debar joins forces with PRL to advance the US bi-fold door system market

PRL are one of the biggest manufacturers of glass and aluminium door products in the US. 94% of US homes are made from timber frames, making them structurally weaker than those made of concrete, meaning they require an expensive beam to be installed to be able to hold a top-hung bi-fold door. Discover how Debar is playing a pivotal role in the transformation of the US bi-fold door system industry, with efficiency and sustainability.

Introduction: Pioneering Change in the Bi-Fold Door Sector in the United States

At Debar, we’ve always been driven by a mission to innovate, engineer, and deliver high-performing hardware solutions that redefine how bi-fold door systems function across the globe. When we set our sights on the United States market, we knew we needed a strong, strategically aligned partner – one who shared our commitment to quality, design excellence, and forward-thinking solutions.

That partner was PRL Glass Systems, one of the largest manufacturers of glass and aluminium doors in the US. Together, we’ve introduced a completely new product category to the US market, reshaping the standard for bi-fold doors and unlocking new opportunities for structural efficiency, thermal performance, and customer satisfaction.

Debar and PRL unite in transforming the US bi-fold door system sector

Two years ago, Debar sparked a partnership with WHS Fenestration, a specialist in window and door hardware distribution based in Reno, North Nevada. Specialising in the design, distribution and manufacturing of window and door hardware, they were the perfect partner as we expanded across the continent

Through WHS Fenestration, we were introduced to PRL—a long-standing customer of theirs and a highly respected fabricator and distributor with reach across the US and into Mexico. From our first discussions, it was clear that PRL was looking to expand their offering and modernise their product line.

Identifying the challenge: A market ready for change

Before our collaboration, PRL exclusively offered top-hung bi-fold systems. Top-hung bi-fold door systems are popular in the US due to the perception that they operate more smoothly, however they are less structurally sound as the weight of the system hangs from the top. While effective in certain applications, these systems presented increasing limitations – particularly in the US, where 94% of residential buildings are timber-framed.

Top-hung systems require a structural beam to support the weight of the door, adding both cost and complexity to projects. For PRL, this meant extended lead times, higher overall costs, and a product that was becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate in a competitive market.

Recognising this, PRL engaged with our technical team in the UK to explore alternative solutions that would allow them to enter a new product segment—and futureproof their bi-fold door offering.

The solution: Introducing bottom-rolling bi-fold door systems

Following an extensive period of development, testing, and training, we worked with PRL to successfully introduce a bottom-rolling bi-fold door system – designed by Debar and fabricated by PRL for the US market.

Bottom-rolling systems shift the weight of the door from the top to the bottom, offering significant structural and operational advantages:

  • No need for overhead structural reinforcement
  • Easier installation and adjustment
  • Slimmer profiles for enhanced aesthetics
  • Ability to carry larger, heavier glass panels
  • Improved post-installation serviceability
  • Dropped door solution built-in

We rigorously tested the system to ensure full compliance with US performance standards for air, water, and structural integrity which gives PRL the confidence to take a bold new product to market. This is especially important as PRL need to consider various climates across the US.

“This partnership has enabled us to enter an entirely new product category, one that’s both innovative and better suited to the structural makeup of most US buildings. Debar’s support has been exceptional from start to finish.”
— Hany Ibrahim, Aluminium Layout / Sales Representative, PRL Glass Systems

Performance meets sustainability

The system’s benefits don’t stop at structural performance. Debar’s bottom-rolling bi-fold system also supports improved thermal efficiency, helping PRL lower the U-value of their doors from 0.34 to 0.31, a significant gain in a market where sustainability is quickly becoming a purchasing priority.

By offering a more sustainable, energy-efficient door system, PRL is better equipped to meet evolving market expectations—and lead the way in responsible construction.

“We’ve always believed that innovation must serve a purpose. Working with PRL proves that intelligent hardware design can solve structural challenges while delivering measurable environmental benefits.”
— Tim Shaw, International Sales Manager, Debar.

A strong market response for bottom-rolling bi-fold systems

The response to the new product exceeded all expectations. Within just one week of launch, PRL received multiple orders from clients across the US. Thanks to thorough training and technical support from our UK teams, PRL’s fabricators were ready to meet demand, and production has remained strong ever since.

As the system gains traction, it’s becoming clear that the US market was ready, and waiting, for a better bi-fold door solution.

What’s Next: Debar and PRL lead the way in next generation bi-fold system technology

Looking ahead, PRL will continue to offer top-hung systems for legacy infrastructure, but our joint focus is on the next generation of door technology. That focus has become even more important considering the devastating wildfires that have impacted communities across North America.

As new homes are built and damaged infrastructure is restored, PRL is playing a vital role – delivering durable, high-performing bottom-rolling systems that offer resilience and sustainability in equal measure.

Because of our local partnership with WHS Fenestration, PRL has rapid access to Debar hardware components with no overseas shipping delays. Lead times have been reduced from six weeks to just three – and in urgent cases, expedited in a single week.

Conclusion: Shaping the future together

At Debar, we believe partnerships like this are the foundation of meaningful progress. By working closely with PRL and WHS Fenestration, we’ve not only introduced a brand-new system to the US market – we’ve helped solve real-world challenges, expand design possibilities, and accelerate the shift toward more sustainable building practices.

This is only the beginning. As demand continues to grow, we’re committed to supporting PRL with new innovations, rapid supply chains, and ongoing product development to keep their customers – and the wider market – moving forward.
